On 12 February 2025 at 10:00 am, Marcello Calisti, Associate Professor at the Biorobotics Institute in Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies (Pisa, Italy) will give a Soft Talk seminar on “Soft Robotics: From Science to Application” at the University of Southern Denmark. This seminar is organized by SDU Soft Robotics and takes place in Odense campus at SDU TEK Ellehammer seminar room Ø28-600-3.

Abstract: This talk will introduce soft robotics and discuss its role as driving force in scientific discovery, but also how soft robotic devices are opening new pathways for innovation. The presentation will include selected examples from the literature as well as recent findings from the speaker, including fundamental models for underwater legged locomotion and the role of deformable components. Finally, the integration of soft robotics into robotics pipeline for field applications will be presented, with a focus on selective harvesting and manipulation.

Bio: Marcello has a PhD in BioRobotics from Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (2012), an MSc in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Florence (2008), and a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Perugia (2005). He is currently an Associate Professor of BioRobotics at Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna. His research interests span the domains of soft robotics, robot locomotion, and field robotics, encompassing underwater and agricultural robotics. He has been the Principal Investigator of scientific and applied projects funded by IUK, SBRI, BBSRC, NatGeo, and private entities. He was also involved in several European projects during the pioneering stages of soft robotics and underwater robotics, such as Octopus IP and RoboSoft CA. He has published more than 25 papers in ISI journals, including Science Robotics, IEEE Transactions on Robotics, and IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics, Soft Robotics, as well as several conference and book contributions. He has been an IEEE Member since 2007, a National Geographic Explorer since 2017, and an FHEA since 2021.
